Boredom busters in Truro and Colchester County this winter
Keep active in this winter with activities ranging from hiking, laser tag, pickleball and more.

TRURO – It’s important to keep active during the winter months for many reasons: staying healthy, socializing with others, and maintaining your overall well-being. Below is a list of activities — for adults and families — ?happening within the town of Truro and the municipality of Colchester County during the coldest months of the year.
Winter activities for adults
HIKING – Get out to see Victoria Park after dark with Night Hikes, hosted every Monday at 6:30 p.m. Meet at Truro Middle School and the group leaders will take you from there.
“They do a number of different hikes at different ability levels,” said Ashley Simms, director of Truro’s parks and recreation department in an interview on Jan. 3. “Right now we have on average between 100 and 150 people that attend those hikes.”
Bring your headlamp, and if it’s snowing, bring snowshoes or crampons for your shoes. Snowshoes can be borrowed through the town of Truro’s equipment loan program.

PICKLEBALL – Unstructured, drop-in pickleball scrimmage takes place at the Douglas Street Recreation Centre on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 12-2 p.m. Adults learning to play the sport might be interested in the Cougar Dome’s adult Learn to Play course that takes place on Tuesday afternoons from 1-2:30 p.m. The first class is on Jan 21.
BADMINTON, BASKETBALL – The Town of Truro hosts drop-in badminton and basketball sessions, which take place from 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at Truro Middle School. The two hours consist of unstructured scrimmage play for anyone ages 17 and up.
YOGA – SEEK Wilderness Accommodations offers weekly yoga classes as well as an upcoming yoga retreat. Weekly classes happen Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at 825 Young Street. On Jan. 25, from 1-3 p.m., SEEK will host a yoga workshop called Let Nature Lead. The workshop will focus on slow and reflective movement, and ways to recharge the body during the winter months.
SKATING – Adults can enjoy public skating at the North Shore Recreation Centre every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The cost is $3 a person unless sponsored. Check the recreation centre’s Facebook for details.

TENNIS – The Cougar Dome is offering tennis lessons for intermediate and advanced players starting Jan. 14. Intermediate tennis lessons take place on Tuesdays from 7-8 p.m., while advanced (3.5 +) lessons run from 8-9 p.m.
Activities for families and kids
OPEN GYM – The Douglas Street Recreation Centre will continue to offer its Drop-In Parent and Tot Open Gym on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, from 9-11 a.m. Registration is not required.
WORKOUT PROGRAM – The Rath Eastlink Community Centre (RECC) has a new program for kids aged 12-15 looking to learn about workouts. The Fit in Six program is a weekly class that will run on Wednesday evenings from 4:30-5:30 p.m. The next class will run from Feb. 19 to March 26.
SWIMMING LESSONS – The RECC will also be offering swimming lessons starting in early February. The eight-week lessons will run from Feb. 4 to April 1 this year. RECC members can register in person only on Jan 22 at noon. Public registration takes place the following day, Jan 23, at noon, either online or in person.

LASER TAG – Open play laser tag will take place on Friday nights at Titan Action Games throughout January from 6:15-8:45 p.m. at the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition Grounds Industrial Building on 73 Ryland Avenue.
SKATING – The Don Henderson Memorial Sportsplex will be hosting Parent and Tot Skate sessions. Sessions are on Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. for adults and children five and under. Cost is $5 per family. For more information, email nancyhdhms@gmail.com.
The North Shore Recreation Centre in Tatamagouche offers public skating on weekends. The cost is $3 a person unless sponsored. Check the recreation centre’s Facebook for details. Drop in for public skates on Saturday from 10-11 a.m. or on Sunday from 12-1 p.m.

Downtown Truro’s ice skating rink – the Caldwell Roach Kings Mutual Insurance Ice Surface – is expected to open soon. Skates can be borrowed directly from the Colchester-East Hants Public Library, which is located right behind the rink itself. They are free of charge with a library card.
TENNIS – The Cougar Dome’s next round of youth tennis lessons begin on Jan. 14 for ages five to nine. There will be eight sessions every Tuesday from 5-6 p.m. where kids can learn new skills, drills, and have fun as a group.
SLEDDING – The Bible Hill Recreation Park at 64 Guest Drive and the Truro-Colchester Legion Hill at 32 Brunswick Street are great sledding locations, according to Colchester County’s Get the Blazes Outside winter guide.

EQUIPMENT LOAN PROGRAM – The Town of Truro has an equipment loan program where residents can rent out winter equipment free of charge. They offer cross-country skis, skates, snowshoes and more.
