Red Shirt Diaries: Improv theatre on a theme has a little extra backbone and muscle, and as vintage Star Trek is already inherently snugged right up to hilarious, this looks promising.

If you don’t know the phrase “Riker’s Beard” as the opposite of “Jumping the Shark,” don’t fret too much because the high-energy crew over at Rapid Fire will have enough silly/filthy shenanigans to keep you generally laughing.
That said, as half of “theatre nerds” is “nerds,” the deep cuts are going to be flying as they speed the USS Improvise through the messy cosmos.
Including an interactive video set design, the actors ask the audience to help figure out the plot, and then away we go in another unique episode in this series running Thursdays through Saturdays through Jan. 25. Red shirts, you say? Make it sew!

FAB Gallery shows: Lots going on over at FAB Gallery at the University of Alberta with three new exhibits!
On the main floor is the MJ Belcourt-curated wawisihcikan – adornment, which takes a look at Indigenous clothing and jewelry with works by Elaine Alexie, Erik Lee, and Carmen Miller.
Rolling with that theme is Moriah Crocker’s itself, the netting, holding, which explores Indigenous beadwork. These both run through Jan. 25.
Upstairs, it’s the 2024 Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada, the results of the only national competition for book design — and what’s more beautiful than a well-built book?
That’s up through Feb. 8 — and the exhibition reception happens from noon to 3 p.m. on Jan. 18, so mark your calendar.

Queer (2024): Coming off the brilliant, kinetic Challengers, Luca Guadagnino’s latest masterpiece is this slow, beautifully shot and edited portrait of American expat William Lee (Daniel Craig), a bemused, highly intelligent yet totally lonely and desperate man trying to navigate a relationship with an expat former soldier (Drew Starkey) much younger than him.
The 1950s Mexico setting is gorgeous, the music terrific and mournful and, of course, it’s adapted from Burroughs, so you know the ride is going to be bumpy yet memorable.
